making it mandatory for every village to have a garbage dumpyard, the state government has now decided to prepare a master plan to lay sewerage network in all the 12,750 and odd gram panchayats in Telangana.

Presently, the sewer network, including open and underground drainage, extends only up to 20,000 km in rural areas. Most of the households have septic tanks.

As part of the 30-day Palle Pragathi action plan, the existing drains have been repaired and trash that was clogging the drains removed.

The government is also likely to seek central funding in addition to contributing from its resources to fund the sewer master plan project.

Also, the option for obtaining loans is not ruled out. The chief minister would take a final call, officials said.

The sewer master plan has been proposed as water utilisation is expected to rise in villages.

The government has promised potable drinking water supply to every household in villages through Mission Bhagiratha project.

"The bulk water as part of Mission Bhagiratha has reached a large number of villages. The gram panchayats which had existing underground water supply network are not getting more water because of Mission Bhagiratha. While a large number of septic tanks have outlived its utility, it is expected that more water utilisation due to Mission Bhagiratha supplies will fill even the existing and functional septic tanks," said an official.

Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao is personally monitoring the results of the 30-day action plan implemented in the villages and firm on ensuring clean, green environment and development in the villages, sources said.

About 100 flying squads, including senior officers, have been formed for surprise visits to the panchayats after the 30-day programme.
